Ferguson shot Stocksbridge into the lead in the eighth minute but between then and the final whistle they had to withstand a heavy barrage but fortunately Carney in the home goal was able to bring off some fine saves to limit the United goal tally. Eight minutes later Jamie Forrester equalized from the six yard line after Frank Strandli had pulled the ball back from the left by-line. Steve Hodge converted from close range after good work from Kevin Sharp before delivering a precise cross. Steve Tobin replaced Frank Strandli at Centre Forward after three minutes of the second half and Hodge claimed his second a minute later but had the luck of the bounce after a centre from Jamie Forrester. David Kerslake replaced Chris Fairclough after sixty minutes. Steve Hodge completed his hat-trick in the seventy-ninth minute with a header from a Mark Humphries corner. Jamie Forrester could easily have had a hat-trick himself and David Kerslake had a good half hour after his return from injury and twice came close to scoring. But right on the final whistle Howe scored for the home team to make the score look respectable.
